Class Eight - Plants and Flowers

Definitions:

  • Spray: A portion of a plant with a number of flowers, eg. Chrysanthemum, petunia, etc.
  • Stem: A plant structure carrying one or more flowers and/or buds and greenery. It may be branched, eg. Sweet Peas, etc.
  • Centrepiece: For the purpose of this class - "centrepiece" means a design to be seen from all sides

Prizes no. 1 thru 5 - $6, $4, $2
Prizes no. 6 thru 23 - $3, $2, $1.50
Prizes no. 24 thru 33 - $6, $4, $2

Rules and Regulations

  1. All plants entered should be in good condition with damaged or old leaves and blooms removed.
  2. Flowering plants should be in bloom for judging.
  3. All plants should be grown and belong to the exhibitor.
  4. Flowers must be grown in individual exhibitor's own home garden (no groups).
  5. An exhibitor may enter only ONE entry in each number section of each class.

Plants Section

  1. African Violet - single crown only
    a) purple
    b) other
  2. Cactus Garden - 3 specimens - in one pot - not to exceed 10"
  3. Succulents - other than cactus - 3 plants - in one container, container not to exceed 15"
  4. Patio Planter
    a) Impatience only -Container not to exceed 15"
    b) Exhibitors Choice - Containter not to exceed 15"
  5. Hanging Plant - Containter not to exceed 15"

Cut Flowers Section

  1. Sedum - 3 stems
  2. Asters - 5 blooms
  3. Pansies - 5 blooms
  4. Dahlias
    a) 3 blooms - 4" (10cm) in diameter and under
    b)1 bloom on the stem over 4" (10cm) in diameter
  5. Zinnias - 5 blooms
  6. Petunias - 3 sprays single variety
  7. Gladiolus - 3 spikes
  8. Snapdragons - 3 stems
  9. Marigolds under 3" - 5 blooms
  10. Marigolds over 3" - 5 blooms
  11. Tea Rose - single bloom
  12. Tuberous Begonia - 1 bloom - floating in your own container
  13. Chrysanthemums - 3 sprays
  14. Salvia - red - 3 spray
  15. Salvia - blue - 3 spray
  16. Calendulas - 3 stems
  17. Cosmos - 3 stems
  18. Hydrangea - 3 stems
  19. Any other flowering annual not listed above - named - 3 stems
  20. Any other flowering perennial not listed above - named - 3 stems
  21. "Size Small" - a mini fresh flower arrangement not to exceed 5" (13cm) high, 5" in width, and 5" in length, including container (be sure to measure)
  22. "Very Berry" - a small design not to exceed 10"x 10" - may include fresh flowers, vines and berries
  23. "Rhapsody in Blues" - a design prominently in blues and/or purples
  24. "All Roads Lead to the Fair" - a design of wayside materials - wild flowers and/or grasses
  25. "Smell the Roses" - 3 roses incorporated into a design with the roses being the dominant feature - may include other plan material.
  26. "Giving Thanks" - a centerpiece to include fresh flowers, a source of light, other accessories permitted
  27. For MEN only: "Grandpa's Mug" - a design in a mug

HORNER LILIES NOVICE SPECIAL
1st time exhibitor with the highest points earned in Class Eight
receives a $25.00 Gift Certificate from Horners.

  • Plants Best in Class - Prize money $10
  • Cut Flowers Best in Class - Prize Money $10

NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS or FAMILY FLOWER DISPLAY

Rules & Regulations

  1. No entry fee required.
  2. Open to all non -profit organiztions. Name of exhibitor must be included in the display.
  3. This display is to be a collection of flowers tastefully displayed on a 4' x 30" space. All flowers must be labelled with the name of the flower. There must be a minimum of 12 different varities.
  4. This display will not be judged and is for educational purposes only.
  5. Each exhibitor must register at the fair office when the display is placed. Displays may be brought in on either Thursday, Sept. 23 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. or on Friday, Sept. 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
  6. Each family or organization will receive $15 for the display.
